Helping to empower the women of Tanzania
Volunteer in Tanzania with Give a Heart To Africa
The women of Tanzania need our help
Tanzanian culture is patriarchal and education, particularly at the secondary level, is very expensive. The average Tanzanian makes less than $1.25 US per day which makes sending a child to school very difficult. If a family can afford to send a child to secondary school, it is usually male children who are favoured. The result? Only 5% of girls complete secondary education.
What can a woman without education living in a patriarchal society achieve? Without education and professional guidance, many Tanzanian women end up either serving their husbands or struggling to support their children if their husband leaves.
This is the situation in which most of the women we strive to help find themselves. It is heartbreaking and unfair, and we want to help. Thus, the non-profit organization Give A Heart To Africa (GHTA) was born. GHTA empowers women with the skills to improve their situations and pull themselves out of poverty.
We have developed an adult education centre that helps disadvantaged women gain better employment or start their own small businesses. Here women learn English, business, and computer skills free of charge. It opens their minds, shows them new opportunities in life, and gives them a sense of purpose and satisfaction. Upon completing our six month course, we assist 3 to 5 of our graduates, financially and professionally, in starting their own businesses. We run a women’s co-operative in the retail area of Moshi where women get their businesses started.
What is Give A Heart To Africa?
- A non-profit organization that focuses on empowering women with the skills to improve their situations and pull themselves out of poverty
- One of the few non-profit organizations that is run 100% by volunteers, enabling 100% of all donations to go directly to our school, students, their business and volunteer accommodation. We believe so strongly in the cause that the only paid staff we have is our local Tanzanian school staff. All of our school staff are former GHTA graduates.
- An Adult Education Centre that offers valuable FREE English, business, and computer skills training to disadvantaged women
- A Women’s Co-operative that gives retail presence for up to 6 graduates to get their small businesses started
- A unique volunteering opportunity, that accepts international volunteers from all walks of life to assist with teaching one of our three subjects. Without international volunteers, our school would not run.
